What are good leading safety indicators?

Lagging indicators are easy, such as LTIFR and TRIFR. Leading indicators are important, so that we improve and take the right actions. What are good safety leading indicators?

Based on empirical observations, and without supporting numerical data, I would suggest that leading indicators for safety performance for an organization could include many of the following: Increase in near misses reported Increased disorderliness Increase in non-conformances recorded in daily/weekly inspections Significant increase in employee overtime Increased citing employees for safety violations Increased rate of mechanical/process failures Increased employee absenteeism and/or vacancies Increased turnover in supervisors and/or managers Frequent change in safety supervisor(s) and/or manager(s) Increased employee turnover rate Significant decrease in membership and frequency of safety committee meetings Increase in management/worker confrontation Increase in employee layoffs Perceived threat of or actual facility closure Significant prolonged downturn in facility product orders and sales If anyone seeks more on this, see:

Really important question for us to be asking. Training is a leading indicator I like quite a bit. The more people that are trained effectively, the fewer safety incidents will occur. Effectively is the key word here though I think - what we need to be careful about is relying solely on the number of training sessions and the attendance at those sessions. We need to make sure the training is working, and we do that by evaluating whether the training is effective (a Plan-Do-Check-Act framework can be helpful here).

Hey Pieter,

I have a couple of basic ones but I would love to hear from others as I think we could come up with a great list!

Leading Indicators
- Safety Training
- Employee perception surveys
- Safety Audits
- Safety Meetings

What else do we have out there?
